I am the proud mama of a 3 year old boy. I'm also a seasoned yoga instructor and small business owner. All of my "focus on your breathing" and "listen to your body" can fly out the window when you're in the middle of a toddler tantrum. What are the best ways to soothe that toddler who is smack dab between baby and big guy? First, I'm no parenting expert. I'm just a mama, trying to figure out what works in my home, with my child and sharing any insights along the way.
Teaching self soothing is a huge part of my every day. My biggest ally in this job? Besides my husband, of course, is Daniel Tiger. For those who do not have a toddler, Daniel Tiger is the PBS spinoff of Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. It's animated and each episode has a lesson and a catchy musical phrase to sum up the lesson. Examples: "When you're feeling frustrated, take a step back and ask for help" or "Take a deep breath...and let it go". I assure you if you've got a toddler dilemma, Daniel Tiger probably has an episode and catchy jingle for you.
So, as a yoga instructor and mama, it's wonderful to be able to incorporate these little lessons in self soothing, emotion regulation in a fun way.
Here are a few of Daniel Tiger-inspired Yoga Tools for Toddlers (actually not just for toddlers!):
